About Our Grants and Scholarships
The Opera Guild of Southern Arizona (OGSA) started in Tucson in 1958. Our mission is to support education and training in opera, to sponsor and assist operatic programs and activities, and otherwise to cultivate a wider public interest in opera in Southern Arizona.
OGSA Scholarships
In the spring of 2019 the Opera Guild of Southern Arizona will award scholarships to one graduate and one undergraduate student at the University of Arizona, chosen by the voice faculty. In addition, an Encouragement Award will be awarded to a qualified Pima Community College student. Voice faculty at both institutions will choose scholarship awardees.
The 2019 scholarships comprise:
- one graduate OGSA Scholarship – $1,000.
- one undergraduate OGSA Scholarship – $1000
- one PCC Encouragement Award – $250
We will ask recipients of the OGSA Scholarships to perform at an Opera Guild event.
OGSA Grants
OGSA has funds to help University of Arizona opera students pursue opportunities complementary to their academic studies. The grants are intended to help cover additional costs opera students incur, such as attending summer opera programs, travel to auditions, and helping to cover costs of concerts and recitals.
Grant applications may be submitted to OGSA at any time. The deadline for applications specifically for 2019 summer programs is May 1, 2019.
The Board of Directors will judge grant applications on criteria based on academic performance (including grade point average), vocal performance and activities, career ambitions and goals, strength of the faculty endorsement, and quality of the application.
The Board of Directors may request an interview with the applicant, and grant recipients should submit a summary of the program or activity attended.
