2021 Online Student Vocal Showcase
Conditions and Student Application
(please read all sections carefully)
Your application must be received by Friday, April 9.
Your performance video must be received by April 26.
Due to Covid-19, the Opera Guild’s annual competition for Southern Arizona vocal students will be changed this year to a non-competitive Student Vocal Showcase, with awards the same for all graduate students and for all undergraduates. Applicants will submit video performances for approval by their primary vocal teacher. Each graduate student providing a faculty-approved video will receive $700, and each undergrad providing a faculty-approved video will receive $400. The awards will be paid upon the primary vocal teacher’s acceptance of the video.
The accepted videos will be posted online and will remain accessible indefinitely. Both the Fred Fox School of Music and the Opera Guild of Southern Arizona will publicize the event.
Conditions of Participation
Students enrolled at a Southern Arizona college for the current semester and who are nominated by their primary vocal teacher are eligible to complete the application form and to submit a video performance. Singers are responsible for the accompaniment, recording, production, and delivery of an acceptable video. You are encouraged to obtain help from your faculty and other resources available to you in preparing and recording your performance.
The faculty will name eligible students as participants or alternates. An alternate will participate in the Showcase only if a designated participant does not submit an acceptable video by the specified deadline. A maximum of 16 singers will appear in the final online video.
Please obtain your primary vocal teacher’s approval of your selected aria before submitting your application. The aria must be one that you have not sung at a previous Quest for the Best or in an Opera Always! video. The video must be five minutes or less in length. Your video must be received by both the faculty and the Opera Guild by April 26.
Guidelines for Videos Submitted
As an aid to achieving quality and consistency in recordings, students who are on campus or live locally are strongly encouraged to use the recording facilities at the Fred Fox School of Music. If you are not able to record on campus, please consult with your faculty for advice in making the best possible recording.
Do not announce your name, the aria, etc., on your video. These will be added later as titles.
